Lemon Melon
This sliding puzzle is my variation of the Black and White puzzle as shown in Edward Hordern’s ‘Sliding Piece Puzzles’. See my books page..
The puzzle is played in a 5x4 tray. There are five blue unit blocks spelling the word LEMON. There are five green unit blocks spelling the word MELON.
The red and yellow tricubes are free to slide, although they each have only 3 possible positions. The green and blue bevelled blocks are fixed. The object of this puzzle is to move MELON from the top to spell LEMON at the bottom, and to move LEMON from the bottom to spell MELON at the top. Part of the fiendish delight of this puzzle is that halfway through (if you get that far) you suddenly realise that you can’t remember which way you are moving any of the letters!!! This is due to the fact that I selected what I believe to be the only two five-letter anagrammatical fruits. The basic process for solving the puzzle is similar to that used in puzzles such as Tower of Hanoi or Chinese Rings.
